Chief Acevedo, a Gun Control Advocate, Headed to Miami
Art Acevedo, a chief that has been the most boisterous about gun control was just named Miami's latest police chief. We felt it is important to give the good people of the Miami area a heads up of what to expect and be ready to fight for your gun rights.
We recently wrote about what chiefs of police thought about gun control in an article you can read here. Suffice it to say, we don't agree with the chiefs and most of their line personnel don't either. But, Chief Acevedo is a little different when it comes to how other chiefs act. Acevedo makes comments on gun control like it is an olympic sport.
Chief Acevedo made his start with the California Highway Patrol in Los Angeles. He rose to the rank of Chief within that agency. I worked with CHP all over the state and can tell you they are not a fan of Chief Acevedo. In fact, no one could say a kind word about him when I've asked about him.
After leaving CHP, he became the Chief of Austin, TX and then the Chief of Houston PD. I have friends at both agencies and from what they have told me, they hated him just like the officers at CHP hated him. The comments that I got from these officers was that Chief Acevedo is a political grandstander that likes to pander to the cameras.
Self Admitted RINO
An example came with an interview with Texas Monthly in which Chief Acevedo bragged about being a lifelong RINO (Republican in Name Only). Chief Acevedo had registered as a Republican in California, however he said that he, "Felt that policing in the United States has had "disparate treatment and impact on disenfranchised communities — especially communities of color and poor communities." He felt that the Republican party has grown out of control and that he no longer identified as a Republican.
Anti Gun Stance
Chief Acevedo often uses his own agency's tragedies to push for new gun control. In 2019, a sergeant with Houston PD was murdered during a domestic violence call. At the same time, a bill as winding its way through congress that would limit gun rights for some domestic abusers. Instead of staying out of national politics, Chief Acevedo doubled down on the anti-gun rhetoric. During a news conference, Chief Acevedo said, “You’re either here for women and children and our daughters and our sisters and our aunts — or you’re here for the NRA. So I don’t want to see their little smug faces about how much they care about law enforcement when I’m burying a sergeant because they don’t want to piss off the NRA,” said Acevedo.
On the surface it seemed that Chief Acevedo was advocating for women's rights and his own downed sergeant, but it actually upset a lot of street cops at Houston PD because he was grandstanding for gun control. When this happened, private social media groups where cops congregated became a place people could vent about Chief Acevedo's pretend outrage and rhetoric.
In 2018, after a school shooting in Santa Fe, TX, Chief Acevedo issued a defiant condemnation of elected officials who have failed to act on gun control, saying he had “hit rock bottom.” Chief Acevedo wrote in a Facebook post that he had “shed tears of sadness, pain and anger,” after the shooting which happened about 35 miles away from Houston. “I know some have strong feelings about gun rights but I want you to know I’ve hit rock bottom and I am not interested in your views as it pertains to this issue,” he wrote. “Please do not post anything about guns aren’t the problem and there’s little we can do. My feelings won’t be hurt if you de-friend me and I hope yours won’t be if you decide to post about your views and I de-friend you.”
A Warning to Miami
Chief Acevedo is not a conservative and he definitely wants to take your guns away from you. To say that street cops hate Chief Acevedo is an understatement. The people of Miami should be ready to call him out when he starts spewing his rhetoric. Crime also tends to go up when he is the Chief. With that said, don't let Acevedo disarm you while making your city more dangerous. To the cops of Miami PD, good luck. We are here for you.
